The signs of autumn are becoming more visible around the Mataura river. Popular and willow leaves started to dress in the shade of gold, and afternoon light is dipping it’s angle. It brings the fantastic display of colour and steady weather for weeks to come. Autumn is our favourite time of the year to fish Mataura river.
Trout’s focus will shift from mixed diet of terrestrials, caddis and mayfly, to more mayfly centered. As the autumn deepens, steady temperature and waterflow should start bringing the steady mayfly hatch and needless to say it also brings the rising trout, dancing around the current lines throughout the afternoon.
It is time to start tying emerger pattern, and we look forward to the “Mataura madrise” session soon.
